Club History 1983 thru 1992
This is a brief history of the Kiski Twp. Sportsmen and Beagle Club
The 1983 thru 1992 history was transcribed from Meeting
Minutes logs by Duane E. Trabits
January 1983
The building rental fee changed to $80.00 for non-members and $20.00 for members
and civic organizations. Motion was made to allow the snowmobile club to use the hall
for meetings.
February 1983
Motion was made and carried to fix the gas line.
March 1983
Motion made and carried to order 125 trout for pond. Motion made and carried to have
another gun raffle.
April 1983
Motion made and carried to open pond April 24th with a 2 trout limit per day. Mr. West
was present to offer to buy timber. The vote was delayed to next meeting.
July 1983
Larry May to check on price of doors. Motion made and carried to have work day in the
morning and then have the events for Hunting and fishing day.
August 1983
Members looked at different types of doors for the club. Only one refrigerator was
working and the motion was made and carried to buy a new one. They were looking at
the timber offer by Mr. West and to get other offers. Motion made and carried to buy
member buttons and cards.
September 1983
Profit of $946.04 on gun raffle. Motion and carried to have hunter safety course in
October.
October 1983
Motion made and carried to sell timber on club grounds. Scott Morgan to get an
estimate of the value of timber. Hunter safety course canceled and those signed up to
go to spring church. Timber bid was $6500.00 from Bowers Lumber Co. of Slickville,
Pa. Election of new Officers. President; Glenn Floyd, Secretary; Wayne Craig;
Treasurer; Bob Dobrosky as 3rd Vice President; John Long. A new refrigerator to be
delivered within the week.
October 16, 1982 special meeting
Called because gas was off in clubhouse. Decision was made to hook onto Peoples
gas line behind clubhouse.
December 1983
No other timber bids,
January 1984
Pres; Glenn Floyd presiding. West bid $7000 for timber and Byers bid $6500. Motion
carried to sell timber on cash in advance basis. Gas will be back on and well put
backing operation.
February 1984
108 rabbits trapped and brought out to club for beagle club. West withdrew bid for
timber. Motion carried to stock 125 trout in pond.
March 1984
212 total membership. 131 rabbits trapped for beagle club. Still working on gas well.
April 1984, no meeting no quorum
May 1984, no meeting, no quorum
September 1984
Possibility of leasing 179 acres for gas. Barn in bad shape, needs roof. Gas well
hooked up. Kennel roof tarred. Tractor in bad shape. Replaced basement door.
October 1984
Shed and kennel re-roofed. 50yd range and outhouse painted. Barn siding needs
replaced. New keys to be handed out when basement door replaced.
November 1984
Gas lease approved, received $895.00. Furnace installed.
January 1985
Road repaired with Jim Whites dozer. Discussion on new windows. Archery shoot in
basement.
February 1985
57 rabbits stocked for beagle club. Tractor repaired. Motion passed to purchase
targets for basement archery shoot.
March 1985
100 rabbits stocked for beagle club. 14 beavers tagged. Archery targets ready to
shoot at the end of the month. Stocked 125 trout.
April 1985
Basement walls 90% painted. Windows approved. Archery range nearly done. Barn
siding done.
May 19, 1985 Special meeting
Jim Egley leaving. Wants to sell trailer by Feb. 8th.
May 1985
No meeting, No quorum
June 1985
Taking bids on remodeling the club. Discussion on trailer.
July 1985
Only 1 bid received on remodeling for $7200.00. Club bought a weed-eater
August 1985
1 rabid bat was found in Armstrong county. Turtle caught in pond. Hog roast is set for
September 14th.
September 1985
Motion carried to go ahead with remodeling. Archery targets needed. Silhouette shoot
added to hunting and fishing day.
October 1985
Wheat planted by beagle club. Gas back on. New windows in basement, barn,
shooting range painted. Hog roast went well.
November 1985
Big barn completed. 11 fox caught on property. Rental prices went to $80.00 for
outside interests and $30.00 for members.
January 1986
Discussion of paneling inside clubhouse.
February 1986
4 bear were killed in Armstrong county along with 2 coyotes. Discussion on blowing in
insulation in walls. Club to be open to all members when remodeled.
March 1986
100 rabbits trapped for beagle club. 34 dogs at trial. Order 125 trout for pond. Lake
to be fertilized. Archery club to buy targets.
April 1986
No meeting, no quorum
May 1986
142 dogs at trial, 88 trout taken from lake. Talk about re-modeling kitchen.
June 1986

July 1986

August 1986
Work on shooting range. Algae in lake. Archery shoot every Friday 8:00 to start
Motion carried to work on new furnace.
September 1986
14 dogs at trial. Lights to be installed in kennel and barn. Ranges fixed, lights installed.
October 1986
Furnace installed. Bi-fold doors on coat room. Looking for curtains. Fire extinguishers
checked.
November 1986
Beagle club put corn in feeders. TV antenna donated by Gary Rupert. Lights installed
in archery range. 2 red foxes trapped on property. Curtains $22.00 per window for 12
windows.
January 1987
Fire extinguishers installed. Crash bars to be installed on doors.
February 1987
Motion to stock 150 trout in lake.
March 1987
Beagle club stocked 125 rabbits.
April 1987
Battery packs for emergency lighting. Hog roast August 29th. trout stocked. Lake will
open April 26th for fishing.
May 1987
Not much going on
September 1987
Glass blocks on cellar windows. Approved work on heating system.
October 1987
Barn and porches painted, kennel tarred.
November 1987
Crash bars installed and furnace installed. Ceiling needs finished.
Dean White was nominated as President.
January 1988
Motion carried to have a gun raffle. Motion carried to buy a TV and a VCR to promote
attendance at club meetings. Motion carried to partition off the shooting room and heat
this area. This will also create a small storage area.
February 1988
Beagle field trials to begin in February. Work continued to enclose shooting room.
Motion carried to order 125 trout for lake.
March 1988
47 dogs at the field trial. Lock to be installed on the kitchen door. 16mm movie
projector to be donated. Looking into insurance concerns for members fishing at the
lake.
April 1988
4 day beagle trial to be held April 30th. Conservation League banquet went well. 650
gun tickets were sold. Motion carried to close club grounds for all turkey hunting.
May 1988
Dog trial had 145 dogs present. Tuesday evenings were set up for work parties.
There is a lot of work to do and they were working Tuesdays to help get it done.
Building and grounds put up furring strips to keep chairs of the walls. They repaired
the front banister and install lattice on the front porch. 106 trout were caught and a
motion was carried to buy another 100.
June 1988
Floor was painted. Metal shelving was going to be installed in the shooting storage
room.
July 1988
New mower was purchased. The trap area was repaired. Front porch railing installed.
Driveway chains for shooting range installed. Hog roast set for September 10th.
Motion made not to buy liability insurance and confine rental of the club to members
only. Motion carried to print new by-law books. The upper pond was cleaned out by Jim
White. He donated the time and effort.
August 1988

September 1988
Planning to have turkey shoots every other week. Hog roast will be this month.
Turkey raffle tickets available.
October 1988- no notes
November 1988
Trapping had begun on club grounds. Adjustable rests being installed on the rifle
range. Made $175 from the turkey shoots.
January 1989
Only 5 foxes were trapped on club grounds, stocking of rabbits will begin. Gun raffle
tickets available soon. Party planned thereafter.
February 1989
A petition from north Hampton county Federation of Sportsmen’s Club to establish a
shad run on the Lehigh river was presented. Motion carried to stock lake with 125
trout.
March 1989
1614 bears killed in Armstrong county. Jim Speloch is rebuilding the rifle range in the
basement. Rifle team to begin to shoot again.
April 1989
Beagle trials to be in April and May. Club Lake stocked with trout. Cowanshank creek
in Armstrong County stocked with 6000 trout. Motion carried to re-plumb the bathroom
and install spigot on the outside of the building.
May 1989
Motion carried to buy seed to seed hill above pond.
June 1989
Not Much going on
July 1989
Suggestion to use the money from the turkey raffle to pay for a plow and grass seed.
Shield installed on the gas well. People were shooting it from the trap range.
Motion carried to purchase lime for the feed strips. Timer Company coning out to look
at timber to cut.
August 1989
Attending the Dayton fair with a booth for the conservation league.
September 1989
Not much going on
October 1989
Turkey shoots coming up October and November. Turkey raffle tickets available. No
progress on sale of timber.
November 1989
15 ton of lime was spread on the club grounds. Dog derby trial on march 11. gypsy
moth spraying for wooded areas is 12.50 per acre. Some say spraying is 50%
effective. Turkey raffle $873 profit.
January 1990
Beagle club to get ½ turkey raffle proceeds. Club to start to pay $5.00 or trapping of
rabbits. Field trial set for May. Seedlings and grain available from game commission.
14 bears killed in Armstrong County. . 2217 statewide. 125 trout to be purchased.
Gun raffle to be held again this year.
February 1990
Stocked 70 rabbits on club grounds. Deer decoys were used in Armstrong County by
the game commission and quite a few violators were caught. Smallest bear taken 66#
and largest was 421#. Looking to set up 3d shots, looking for volunteers. Motion
carried to buy trout for lake. 10 additional in the 17 to 18 inch range.
March 1990
Beagle trial in May. No progress on turkey shoots. Looking on purchasing a pop
machine. Do not need the money so the timber will stand. Motion carried to have bob
Rodgers do the plumbing in the basement and install faucets on both ends of the
building.
March 1990 special meeting
Made plans to have a 28 station 3d shoot. Need to buy targets. Trophies will be
awarded
as prizes.
April 1990
Beagle trial may 5-8. 154 elk in PA. Motion made for pistol range behind kennels.
May 1990
Train wreck in Buffalo Creek Armstrong County left it dead to wildlife. Checking on
funding for a handicap ramp for the rifle range. 3d shoot went well, next one may 20th.
Deep fryer purchased and needed a new freezer. Motion carried to purchase 5 tables
and 40 metal chairs. Club will sponsor David Shellhammer for summer camp.
June 1990
3d shoot had 98 shooters, next one this month.
July 1990
Dayton fair has booth for conservation league. Need volunteers. 130 shooters from
June 3d shoot. 2 day shoot planned this month. Pop machine from Pepsi free.
August 1990
House bill 2795 passed. Shooting clubs cannot be held liable for noise pollution.
Beagle club said plenty of rabbits on club grounds.
September 1990
Turkey shoots scheduled fro October and November. Turkey raffle to be held this
year.
October 1990
Motion to have calendars printed and passed out free to members. Dues raised to
$15.00 $5.00 junior members.
November 1990
Beagle trial for November. Gas well committee set up to discuss taking over the
existing well and drilling another.
January 1991
Field trial for Jan 20th. Rabbit trapping will start after small game season. Motion
carried to upgrade the electric to 200 amp service for building for the new appliances
installed. Motion carried to stock lake with 125 trout and 10 large palominos. Gun raffle
to be done again this year. Must get permission at a meeting before constructing a
tree stand.
February 1991
Beagle trial had 24 dogs, made $87. Letters to be written to government officials to
protest the fish kill in the Paugh reservoir due to the installation of a hydro power plant
And a proposed salt brine plant to be put in the Mahoning creek. Kenneth Reese
purchased the trailer and will be the new caretaker for the club.
March 1991
Licensed dog trial be held May 6-9. Indoor range to be partially re-built.
April 1991
135 trout stocked in lake. Motion carried to give Angerman associates a 5 year gas
lease on 170 acres for $5 per acre.
May 1991
Wiring finished in basement for .22 range. Painted floor in basement.
June 1991
Next beagle trial in October. 3d shoot in July.
July 1991
Had 168 dogs at the trial. Donated hats as prizes for the handicap fishing days at
Crooked Creek Park. The 1956 property survey map was blown up to mark roads and
various landmarks or members use.
August 1991
5000 walleye fingerlings were stocked in Mahoning and 7000 in crooked creek. 3d
shoot scheduled for this month.
September 1991
Beagle trial to beheld in October. Motion denied to purchase the adjoining 282 acres
for $500 per acre from Ron Pikulski. Purchased 2000 Norway spruce trees. The high
school Vocational agricultural class will plant the trees. The rifle team is re-activated
and targets to be purchased.
New officers; 1st Vice President; Chuck Crawford, 2nd Vice President; Russ Rodgers
Wayne Craig and Mike Ciuca retained positions.
October 1991
Beagle trial this month. Motion carried to allow Avonmore Borough to dump brush on
the property. Hunting and fishing day cost $85. Rifle team matches to start this
month. Turkey tickets available. 16 tree stand permits issued so far. Committee set
up to look into adding on to building.
November 1991
The October trial had 26 dogs. Rick Blystone trapped 5 foxes, 5 cats, 6 coon. Turkey
shoots had 13 turkeys left over and netted $171. Taking bids on addition to building.
Gun raffle made $515.
January 1992
Turkey raffle netted $430 and turkey shoots $197. March dog derby trial to be held.
13 bear taken in Armstrong county. 1 illegal weighing 376#. Glenn bush construction
started laying block on new addition. Rifle team in 2nd place. Phone installed with long
distance restrictions.
February 1992
Dog derby trial to be held March. 1687 bears taken in PA. 3d shoot this month.
Motion carried to stock lake with 125 11-12” trout.
March 1992
11 dogs at derby trial. Repairing water line to kennel.
April 1992
Dog trial may 2-5.
May 1992
139 dogs at licensed trial. Rifle team took second for the year. Handicap fishing day at
crooked creek in June, club donated hats as prizes.
June 1992
Dayton fair in Aug. conservation league to have booth. Motion carried to build
handicap ramp on front porch.
July 1992
3d shoots still making a profit.
August 1992
Field trial coming up in November.
September 1992
Kennel roof painted. Committee set up to replace tractor. Outdoor rifle ranges to be
repaired. Bathrooms to be repaired
